Resumo(s): | Attractiveness can influence cognitive processes automatically. Thus, the main goal of this thesis
was to identify what happens to attention, memory, and time perception when we see someone attractive.
After reviewing the literature in Article 1, Article 2 presents an experiment on the relationship between
attractiveness and attention and memory. To do so, we used an eye-tracker to record participants’ eyemovements
and thus ascertain whether they pay more attention to attractive or to unattractive stimuli. A
recognition task assessed whether participants remembered attractive stimuli better. Results showed
that attractive stimuli captured more attention and produced more recognitions. Article 3 presents
another experiment, on the relationship between attractiveness and time perception outside a laboratory
setting. Participants performed an oddball task with photographs of people or neutral gradients as stimuli.
Results showed participants overestimated the duration of attractive males, regardless of participant’s
gender and sexual orientation. Article 4 attempts at integrating the findings of the previous two articles
into a cohesive whole. Results showed attractiveness did not influence attention and time perception, but
influenced memory in the same way as Article 2. Taken together, our findings stress the importance of
further work on the effects of attractiveness on cognition. |
