Os benfeitores de pobres nas Misericórdias do Minho (séculos XVII-XVIII)

Abstract

Neste trabalho analisamos os benfeitores das Misericórdias do Minho dos séculos XVII e XVIII, destacando o seu contributo para as práticas de caridade destas instituições. Ao mesmo tempo, chamamos a atenção para a importância dos seus legados para a constituição e reforço do património destas confrarias, demonstrando como as preocupações com a salvação da alma os aproximaram dos pobres e se refletiram no crescimento do seu património material e imaterial. Situadas numa região de forte emigração para o Brasil, as Misericórdias do Minho receberam importantes legados de benfeitores “brasileiros”, incrementando a distribuição de dotes de casamento, a assistência à doença e a dádiva de esmolas aos pobres. Porém, não apenas estes, mas muitos outros beneficiaram as Santas Casas na esperança de salvarem a sua alma.

In this work we analyze the benefactors of the Misericórdias do Minho of the 17th and 18th centuries, highlighting their contribution to the charitable practices of these institutions. At the same time, we draw attention to the importance of their legacies to the constitution and reinforcement of the patrimony of these confraternities, demonstrating how the preoccupations with the salvation of the soul brought them closer to the poor and reflected in the growth of their material and immaterial patrimony. Located in a region of strong emigration to Brazil, the Misericórdias of Minho received important legacies of "Brazilian" benefactors, increasing the distribution of marriage gifts, assistance to the disease and the donation of alms to the poor. But not only these, but many others have benefited the Holy Houses in the hope of saving their souls.
