O papel da memória autobiográfica e da solidão no envelhecimento bem-sucedido

Abstract

Portugal tem vindo a apresentar um aumento da esperança média de vida, traduzindose num crescimento progressivo do envelhecimento demográfico ao longo do tempo. O estudo do Envelhecimento Bem-sucedido e das Memórias Autobiográficas permanece escasso. A falta de instrumentos para avaliar diversos construtos nesta faixa etária persiste, também, escassa aos olhares da investigação. O presente estudo visa explorar a relação entre a Memória Autobiográfica (MA) e o Envelhecimento Bem-sucedido (EBS) e, para além disso, explorar a relação entre os mesmos (MA e EBS) e a Solidão. Pretende-se validar os instrumentos Successful Aging Inventory (SAI) e Thinking About Life Experiences (TALE) para a População Portuguesa. Para tal, avaliou-se as qualidades psicométricas dos instrumentos (sensibilidade, validade do construto e fiabilidade), a partir de uma amostra de 102 adultos idosos, de ambos os sexos, socialmente ativos. Os resultados não evidenciaram uma relação significativa entre as MA e o EBS. Os participantes com níveis elevados de solidão apresentaram valores pobres na Escala do Envelhecimento Bem-sucedido e valores elevados na função social, referente à Escala de Pensamento sobre Experiências de Vida. Relativamente aos instrumentos, os resultados mostraram que estes apresentam boas qualidades psicométricas.

Portugal has been showing an increase of average life expectancy, over time refleting a progressive growth of demographic aging. Nevertheless, Successful Aging and Autobiographical Memories studies are almost nonexistent, what contributes to a lack in research instruments to evaluate several constructs in this age group. The present study aims to explore the relationship between Autobiographical Memories (MA) and Successful Aging (SA) and, in addition, a relationship between them (AM and SA) and loneliness. focusing on loneliness and validating the Successful Aging Inventory (SAI) and Thinking About Life Experiences (TALE) instruments for the Portuguese Population. Therefore, the psychometric qualities of the instrument (sensitivity, construct validity and reliability) were evaluated based on a sample of 102 socially active older adults of both sexes. The results did not show a significant relationship between MA and EBS. Participants with higher loneliness levels showed low values on the Successful Aging Scale and higher values in social function, on Thinking About Life Experiences. Regarding the instruments, the results showed that these have good psychometric qualities when used for the Portuguese population.
