Arquitetura e media: crise ou (r)evolução?

Abstract

‘Arquitetura e Media: Crise ou (R)evolução?’ explora a relação entre a arquitetura, a sociedade e os Media, com um olhar atento sobre as transformações que o conceito de participação tem vindo a sofrer sob o novo panorama comunicativo. Trata-se de uma abordagem que remete ao passado para compreender o presente, contemplando ideologias que se têm vindo a desenvolver desde os anos 60 até à contemporaneidade. Abordam-se, numa primeira fase, teóricos como Marshall McLuhan, Giancarlo de Carlo e John F.C. Turner, a fim de expor as implicações iniciais da revolução cultural causada pelos Media na disciplina arquitetónica. Para efeitos de enquadramento nacional, foi considerado o caso do processo SAAL. Conhecidos os conceitos subsequentes desta primeira revolução cultural que atingiu o século XX, a emergência de uma cultura participativa e a convergência dos media são associados ao período da mais recente revolução mediática. A atenção voltase para a atualidade numa perspetiva que confronta a verdadeira posição do arquiteto e do público, numa era em que os papeis se veem confundidos. Balkrishna Doshi e Alejandro Aravena, recentes vencedores do prémio Pritzker, são casos de estudo que permitem corroborar ou refutar princípios assumidos na arquitetura dos dias de hoje. Se na sua obra é evidente a importância dos processos participativos, o reconhecimento internacional que ambos conheceram pode relacionar-se com a perceção da influência que os Media tiveram sobre o papel que cada um desempenha atualmente na produção de uma arquitetura que divide opiniões mas faz convergir meios.

‘Architecture and Media: Crisis or (R)evolution?’ explores the relation between architecture, society and Media, with a watchful eye on the transformations the participation concept has been suffering under the new communicative panorama. It is an approach that refers back to the past to understand the present, contemplating ideologies that have been developed since the 60’s until the present days. In a first phase, theoreticians such as Marshall McLuhan, Giancarlo de Carlo and John F.C. Turner will be introduced, in order to expose the initial implications of the cultural revolution caused by Media in the architectural discipline. For the purposes of national framework, the SAAL case will be studied. Having known the subsequent concepts of this first cultural revolution that reached the 20th century, the emergence of a participatory culture and the convergence of media are associated with the period of the most recent media revolution. Attention is thus drawn to the present, in a perspective which confronts the true position of the architect and the public, in an era in which the roles seem to be confused. Balkrishna Doshi and Alejandro Aravena, recent winners of the Pritzker Prize, are case studies that allow us to corroborate or to refute the principles assumed in today's architecture. If the importance of participatory processes is evident in their work, the international recognition they have both known can be related to the perception of the influence that media took over the role each one is currently playing in the production of an architecture that, divides opinions but converges means.
