The investment is essential for companies to grow and to be competitive in the market. It is through investment in facilities, machines and innovative and modernized processes that companies can increase productivity and successfully make their available resources more efficient. However, to invest it is necessary monetary resources, and the companies can finance their investment with shareholder equity, loaned capital or a combination of both. Although, some companies face financial constraints, motivated by imperfections in the capital market and idiosyncratic factors such as age, size, profitability, level of debt, among others. In recent years, we have witnessed many changes in the structure of economies. The companies make more investments in financial assets, moving funds that could be allocated in real investment (the “crowding out” effect). This phenomenon of replacing real investment for financial investment, with profit being the main reason is designated “financialisation”. The objective of this dissertation is to study the phenomenon of “financialisation” in Portugal using a firm-level panel. In particular, it was intended to investigate if this phenomenon had an effect on the investment of the manufacturing companies between 2008 and 2016. For this, it was an investment of equation with variables deferred investment, sales, operating income, financial expenses and one measure of “financialisation”, financial profits. The results obtained don’t indicate that this can be applied to Portugal and that the companies are using their internal funds to make financial investments, contrary to the results presented by others authors for Portugal.
