A tragédia da impossibilidade do evento: os Maias, o Big Brother e a pedagogia dos media

Abstract

O romance «Os Maias» (1888) de Eça de Queiroz pertence ao cânone da Literatura Portuguesa. Questionando a leitura integral de textos literários no Ensino Secundário, a definição de «Os Maias» no sistema sócio-comunicativo da época como «romance de conversação» leva à decoberta do seu caráter dilemático numa sociedade dos media. No cerne desta abordagem está a reinterpretação do incesto, evento que irrompe na vida social da alta sociedade lisboeta representada no romance. Comparamos este espaço fechado de conversação com o «Big Brother», o que leva a uma crítica da cultura que também diz respeito à atualidade, o que possibilita uma leitura pedagógica de «Os Maias».

The novel «Os Maias» (1888), by Eça de Queiroz, belongs to the canon of Portuguese Literature. Arguing about the full reading of literary texts in secondary school education, the definition of «Os Maias» as «conversation novel» within the socio-communicative system of the time highlights its dilemma in the media society. This approach leads towards reinterpretation of incest, an event that bursts into the social life of Lisbon high society represented in the novel. We compare this confined space of conversation culture with «Big Brother«, a comparison that inables a cultural critique that also refers to current times and to a new pedagogical proposal of reading this novel.
