Resumo(s): | Extracts, infusions, or other types of preparations of medicinal plants have been used since long times for the treatment of various diseases, in what is commonly designated as "folk medicine". In recent years, science has proven that some plant extracts, fractions or specific compounds may have an important role as drug sources with relevant properties. In this lecture, particular emphasis will be given to neuroprotective properties of specific plants/compounds in in vitro as well as in vivo models. New approaches, including nanotechnology, will be addressed. Also, a relevant area that will be addressed is the skin problems, namely recalcitrant injuries, diabetic foot, sores and scars. Based on specific plants it was possible to develop some particular formulations, used in clinical practice. The synergy of the properties of selected plant constituents, gave very positive results associated with a high degree of hydration of the skin and contributing to cell regeneration. Based on the acquired scientific knowledge it was possible to produce products of vegetable origin, with high quality and scientifically proven bioactivity, capable of being incorporated into food products (functional foods) or used as cosmeceuticals |
