Although homeless people in Portugal have been the target of some political and social measures, few studies have focused on their live speeches. Thus, the purpose of this study is to give voice to the homeless, listening to the meanings that they attribute to their life trajectories, if they experienced stigmatizing experiences and how they perceive their homelessness condition: as a consequence of an individual order or as a result of limited structural factors. In order to achieve these objectives, we observed street contexts in which these people live and conducted interviews with eleven participants between the ages of 25 and 57 and whose time in the street ranges from three months to 11 years. The results present some data from this observation as well as the results of the interview analysis. The interviews were analyzed using Thematic Analysis. The analysis identified four central themes: Self- Responsibility, Failures in social protection systems; Feelings of shame; Discrimination / Stigma. The results are discussed taking into account human rights and the need for social and political changes that prevent the continuity of this cycle of poverty, social exclusion and suffering. |
