The physical properties of habitats in the intertidal zone play an important role on the development of biological communities by offering support for their survival. The physical structure of the habitat itself, the number of microhabitats, the sediment deposition and stabilization, the wave damping effects, all contribute for the more or less adequacy of a given structure for biological colonization. In marine environments, macroalgae acts as biological stuctural substrates, where the physical structure represents one of the most important factores capable of mediating the variability of macrobentic communities. The abundance of macroinvertebrates becomes considerably higher in vegetated areas, as they create a unic set of benefitial conditions for colonization. In order to disentangle the effect of the habitat structure from the biological attractiveness of the algae for macroinvertebrates settlement, four patches of artificial algae were created and added to a natural intertidal algae habitat for an in situ manipulation experiment for 6 mounths (may to november). Evaluating the temporal patterns of substrate colonization, it was observed a consistent increase of the abundance and richeness until 3 months of colonization, with the macroinvertebrates communities reaching a considerable level of stability (specific richness, diversity and equitability) up from that time. The taxonomic diversity showed a positive tendency, indicating a good resilience of the susbstrates. This translated into a gradual increase of the functional diversity and the distribution of the functional space through the colonization times (T1 a T4), representing a continuous improvement of the macroinvertebrats communitie structure. It was also possible to notice a conection between the successful functional groups (‘epiphitic-epibenthic’, ‘tube builder’, ‘attached’, ‘borrowers-borrowers-dwellers’, ‘supension and deposit feeders’) where these presented a dependency for a complex tridimensional structure, highlighting its importance for the success of these organisms. The use of a diferent set of metrics related to taxonomic and functional diversity and the new sampling methodologies, allowed to obtain a higher level of information, making it possible to confirm the dependency of several groups of organisms with the structure of the habitat and to attest the viability of the artificial substrates as a sampling methodology.
