The following thesis aimed at demonstrating that it is possible to teach Modern Physics, in general, and Einstein's theory of Relativity in particular, to undergraduate students. Despite the conscience that both Physics and Mathematics are inseparable - that together they complement each other, they bring the essence of scientific knowledge and allow a much wider reading of the Universe, to undergo this project, the conviction that Physics doesn't just stick exclusively to Mathematics was reinforced and that it goes much beyond its rules and formatting. In this dissertation the Theory of Relativity and Modern Physics, which we find particularly interesting for nonuniversity students and teachers, is presented, together with a set of suggestions of ways to approach these topics with the students. In order to be able to assess the viability of the study of the Theory of Relativity in non-university teaching, despite the constraints of time and the reduced number of lessons available to work with the students, worksheets on these topics were presented to two classes of Regular teaching, years 11 and 12 as well as to two classes of Professional teaching, years 11 and 12 to whom I was teaching this school year 2015/ 2016 and one class of year 8. After the analysis of the answers to all the questions of the four activities undertaken by the students of different school years, type of school courses and, not less important, age, the findings revealed that, in general, the students managed to answer them successfully. Therefore, according to the results obtained, it is fair to infer that the study of the Theory of Relativity is possible as long as the right tools are used and adjustments to this stage of teaching are made. The data gathered in the different activities clearly indicate that the students have the notion that space and time are relative. This leads to the conclusion that these are concepts which may and must be approached within these school years, avoiding the formulation of alternative conceptions that frequently remain until University and that become very difficult to deconstruct. |
