camuflou e obliterou o castelo do tempo português.
The city of Tangier, in Morocco, North Africa, was part of a vast expansion plan driven by Portugal, under the Christian reconquest, and was conquered to the moors in 1471, followed afterwards by a permanent occupation during two centuries. Besides the changes made on the existing islamic structures, the construction of new fortified structures has been considered as one of the key reasons, for ensuring that this city was kept under portuguese domain for such a long time. The ‘Castelo Novo’ (or Lower Castle) was built under the reign of D. João II (1481-95), and is one of these new structures. Following the Portuguese retreat from Tangier in 1661, the city has had a continuous occupation until today, with a strong urban development, in particular, for the past few years, which have made this structure to disappear. The area that has been occupied exclusively by the castle for centuries is nowadays completely filled with new urban constructions. The disappearance of this fortification, along with the scarce information in terms of documents on one hand, but the abundant information of its representation in drawings and paintings on the other hand, do justify this “recovery”. The work conducted, intends to recover the original image of this castle (as it should have been between 1481 and 1661), throughout the analysis of visual and written documentation, on-site validation work, and using a new visual and graphic representation, taking into consideration the key constructive moments. This reconstitution has implied a detail study of the different elements, taking into consideration the transition and the arrival of the modern era, in a period characterized by the evolution on the art of war, where the use of gunpowder was more and more common, and consequently, the military architecture was substantially influenced and adapted to this new reality. This work also tries to capture, what would be the rhetorical and functional assumptions when the castle was built, and how the construction reflected these challenges. |
