One of the main challenges that organizations face concerns the maximizing of their employees’ performance levels and their overall job quality. In order to achieve this, organizations must be able to foster their employees’ job satisfaction. Several work/job dimensions, both intrinsic and extrinsic, have an influence on human behaviors inside organizations. Thus, it becomes an organizational challenge how to provide workers with opportunities for professional achievement and personal growth, as well as overall well-being and job quality. The human resources are the instruments responsible for enhancing the quality and efficiency of the services provided by an organization. Given that job satisfaction in health institutions signals the quality of the care provided to patients as well as the evaluation performance levels of health units, we were interested in assessing the levels of job satisfaction of the Technicians of Diagnosis and Therapy. For carrying out the empirical study, we conducted a questionnaire survey with a sample of Technicians of Diagnosis and Therapy working in the Braga district. The results show that the salary is one of the work dimensions that most influences job satisfaction levels; and that 50 per cent of the sample that reported being satisfied or very satisfied with the job also held a more stable contract arrangement. Additionally, the results show that the more autonomous are the technicians in the exercise of their profession, the more satisfied they are. This study thus contributes to a better understanding of the job/professional satisfaction of a group of health workers that has received little attention in the literature. The main limitation of this study relates to the low response rate to the questionnaire; thus the empirical results cannot be generalized.
