Recently, the pairing of population growth with the rising number of vehicles circulating, has led to a significant increase of noise pollution in the urban environment. Therefore it is essential, when projecting new buildings, to consider its location and disposition in order to improve its surroundings and to reduce its negative effects, eventually decreasing noise levels. Only doing so will guarantee the well being of the population. This dissertation consisted of the study and analysis of the existing relationships between the urban form, through the Sky View Factor index (SVF), and the urban environment, present in urban areas. To do so, it was necessary to evaluate the level of noise through the Equivalent Continuous Sound Level, and the urban form through the Sky View Factor, in specific places of the city of Braga. Following intensive research on the subject, the project’s first stage was the analysis of the cartography of Braga, using AutoCad in order to define several locations, representing different urban forms and noise sources, mainly coming from automobile traffic. In the second stage, after choosing the places to study, cars and trucks were accounted for and measured for noise. SVF was calculated for each of the case study locations by using an extension of the ArcGIS tool, then all height measurements of the surrounding area of the case study locations were inserted into the program. The traffic flow was organized in classes. Finally, Microsoft Excel was used to create graphs that help interpret the results coming from the correlation of the urban noise, the traffic and the Sky View Factor index. Considering that the Sky View Factor index is highly dependent on the obstruction caused by buildings, and knowing that its reduction leads to a larger obstructed area, this study was based on the hypothesis that sound propagation is inversely proportional to the SVF factor. In this sense, the dissertation attempted to prove that, in this case, noise level would be higher due to sound wave reflection. As a conclusion, the study proved that, for the locations used as case studies, the inverse proportionality was verified and matched the hypothesis.por
