This thesis focuses on the definition of the profile and functions of music education in the a generalist and specialized branches of primary school today. In order to contextualize the theme, institutions and professionals that contributed to the evolution of the music education were identified, emphasizing the way and the strategies and dynamics used. The research started out with a vast bibliography analysis and was developed as a multiple case study that took place in six schools. Considering the goals of the research the bibliography analysis included documents, legal instructions from government and Ministries of Edutacion, and also multiple other sources, such as articles, books, master and PhD theses. The pointed out goals originated a theoretical framework in three chapters: the first two allow us to understand the present situation of music education in the 1st Cycle of studies from an historical point of view, underlining the major evolutions occurred in the generalist and specialized branches throughout history up to present times. The third chapter presents a summary of the research developed in the first two chapters, underlining a comparative perspective between branches and outlining the particularities of Portuguese Primary Music Education in comparison to other Countries. The state of the art was thus identified, having a starting point at a national level, in studies from Vieira (2008, 2009, 2011) about the branches of Music Education in generalist and specialized systems; from Vasconcelos (2002) and Folhadela, Vasconcelos & Palma (1998), about the identity of the specialized system; and from Palheiros (2000) and Mota (2002) about the music education in different school levels, in both students’ and teachers’ perspectives; at an international level, the research focoused on authors who wrote about a set of experiences and reports of case-studies, among which Abril & Gault (2006), Bolduc (2011), Chétail (2002-2004), Wiggins & Wiggins (2008), Gresser, (2012), Herbst et al (2005) and Mills (1991, 2008, 2010) are empathised. Based on the historical ad theoretical framework, it was possible in the research project to interpret and redefine the meaning of the evolution of music education in the 1st Cycle in Portugal in what its profile and functions have been in the generalist and the specialized branches. For a better understanding of the problem, our methodological option was a multiple case-study that allowed us to search in context the theoretical information. Using a qualitative methodology, three primary schools and three specialized schools were selected. In the first three, the research focused on the school subject of Music Expression; in the others three the focus was on subject of Music Education for beginners. The results obtained are mainly in three areas: teacher training, curriculum organization and curricular contents. In what teacher training is concerned the study shows that there has been a progressive approach between the two types of training for the different school systems (generalist and specialized), and that this approach has been reinforced by the recognition of the need or a specialized music teacher as coadjutant of the generalist primary teacher. In what curriculum organization is concerned the study confirms that there are no reasons for the existence, at this age level, of different branches of music education (generalist and specialized) and that the focus should be on providing good music education, through adequate pedagogical practices to all children ( which is in fact recommended by several world organization studies on music education). Finally, in what curricular contents are concerned, the study shows great disparities between generalist and the specialized programs, and also between the different specialized programs studies, both in specific goals, subject matter and level of difficulty. These conclusions indicate the need for better articulation between the generalist and specialized schools and for a stronger identity both curricular programs content and goals. Differences between pedagogical criteria and practice were also identified, and the participants in the study suggested that they should be reduced. In summary, the research project underlined the importance of music education in the 1st Cycle of studies and the need for its consisted, qualified and democratic promotion among all children.por
