The academic adjustment of students in higher education has important implications in the teaching/learning process. It is then up to the University to consider this issue and adopt criteria and develop actions to facilitate the adaptation of students to the new academic condition. This study was designed to contribute to the understanding of the process of academic adjustment or adaptation of college students, from a career socio-cognitive perspective (Lent, 2004; Lent, Taveira, Sheu & Syngley, 2009). In that sense, we sought to validate a measure and to analyse the plausibility of the structural model of well-being in academic normative situations proposed by Lent (2004) with data from Angolan college students. We also intend to charaterize the process of academic adjustment of Angolan students and to analyse interindividual differences in that process by sex, ethnicity, college year, academic specialization, and higher education institution. The sample includes 317 participants, 165 (49.7%) women and 152 (45.8%) men, with a mean age of 25.83 years (N = 303, SD = 7. 55). Of these, 170 (51.2%) reside in Luanda and are mostly belonging to ethnic Kimbundo (n = 74, 43.5%), while 147 (44.3%) reside in the province of Lubango, and belong to ethnic Umbumdos (n = 57, 38.8%) and Nhaneca Humbe (n = 30, 20.4%). Students attending the first three years of graduation, with 199 in the first year, 96 in the second and 22 in the third year, at the private University of Óscar Ribas (n = 170) and at the public Higher Institute of Educational Sciences (n = 147). The instrument used for data collection was the Academic Adjustment Questionnaire developed by Lent (AAQ, Lent, 2004) and adpted to Portuguese context by Taveira and Lent ( 2004). The results of the study of AAQ items indicate the existence of good psychometric properties. The analysis of the internal consistency of the AAQ subscales (Cronbach α) indicates the existence of acceptable levels for all subscales (Cronbach α Min = .72, Max = .87), but for Perceived Stress subscale (α = . 20). The analysis of construct validity of AAQ (Confirmatory Factorial Analysis) indicates that a model of six factors adjusts satisfactorily to the Angolan data [n = 241, X2 (89)=115.54, p <.05, CFI = .98, RMSEA = .04, SRMR = .04]. The factors are selfefficacy, goal progress, perceived resources and supports, situational affect, academic satisfaction, and overall life satisfaction. Descritive results of Descriptive analysis results in the global sample indicate that the profile of academic adjustment is positive and that there are interindividual differences in this process, in one or more dimensions, as a function of sex, ethnicity, school year, academic specialization and higher education institution. . The results of the test of the structural model of academic adjustment proposed by Len (2004) (Path Analysis), indicate a good fit of the model to the data of Angolan context [n=256, CFI=0.978, RMSEA = 0.090, X2 (4)=12.2]. All paths were statistically significant, with the structural model explaining 45% of the variance of academic satisfaction and 13% of the variance of overall life satisfaction. In general, the results indicate that the Portuguese version of the Academic Adjustment Questionnaire proposed by Lent (2004) is a valid measure for the investigation of this process in the Angolan academic context. The results are consistent with previous results obtained with Lent (2004) well-being normative model, evidencing that this is an important theoretical perspective to explain academic satisfaction and overall satisfaction with life of college students of different cultures and ethnicities. We can also conclude that the profile of academic adjustment of our global sample is positive and that there are individual differences in that academic adjustment process that must be considered in the design of career interventions and in future research that takes into account the limitations of the present study.
