This study analyzes the relation between strategy and organizational culture in football clubs. It presents a comparative analysis regarding how Portugal’s top three clubs manage their strategy in respect to the following fields of study: change; leadership and control; and rivalry, competition and dynamic capabilities. Regarding organizational culture the following fields of study are considered: historical and cultural analysis; organizational culture and socialization; and idiosyncratic resources. The methodology used is composed of document analysis and three focus groups in which participated a total of twenty four supporters of the three major Portuguese clubs: Futebol Clube do Porto; Sport Lisboa e Benfica; e Sporting Clube de Portugal. This study provides a better understanding regarding the way in which strategy and culture are related to football in general and to the studied clubs in particular. Besides providing a conceptual understanding of the relation between strategy and culture, the study also innovates by developing the subject on a usually not so explored context, although rich for the empirical analysis of the subject. Furthermore, it provides a practical contribute by showing in which way can football clubs use their culture sphere to improve their strategy, and in which way can strategy help strengthen the organizational culture of those clubs.
