Much has been asked about curriculum development in education and teaching, more specifically on the question of how to develop and evaluate. The curriculum is not a ready-to-wear of one size (Formosinho, 2007) and predominates the emergence of an integrated curriculum that respects the cultural, social, cognitive and economic differences of students. In this perspective, I consider that the local context and it’s culture should coexist and be an integral part of the national curriculum, through processes dynamic and continuous of teaching and learning, according to the characteristics, needs, interests and capabilities of students. Therefore, this research has as objects of study the curriculum development through local culture using the methodology of Integrated Curriculum Project (Alonso, 1998). Consequently, the purposes of the investigation are to analyze the importance that local culture plays in curriculum development and how it can be conciliated with the curriculum content. The Integrated Curriculum Project views the curriculum on the prospect of project that allows students greater responsibility, participation, interest and motivation in the process of teaching and learning. Students construct their own knowledge by assuming a central role in their learning and the education professionals takes the function of mediator and instigator of opportunities. This research examines two projects in which the curriculum is developed on the perspective of Integrated Curriculum Project that has like central core the local culture. These were developed in the ambit of Supervised Teaching Practice of the Masters in Pre-school Education and Teaching of the 1.º cycle of Basic Education, with a group of 15 children’s aged 5 years and another group of 15 students of the 2.º year of primary education. Following a collaborative action-research-reflective methodology (Alonso & Lourenço, 1998), the main objective of the projects was the discovery and deep knowledge of the local culture. The results demonstrate the development of competencies (to know, to know-do, to know-live together and to know-be), the learning of aspects of local culture, family involvement and the educational community in general. The main conclusions taken with the research is that it’s possible to combine local culture with the curriculum development and the develop of the curriculum through the Integrated Curriculum Project, with the subject of local culture, allows education professionals to provide integrative activities, contextualized and meaningful, where students learn in an integrated and meaningful way the contents related to culture and different areas of knowledge.
