Logaritmos em Portugal (sécs. XVII e XVIII)

Abstract

Os logaritmos, inventados em 1614, chegaram relativamente cedo em Portugal: aparecem em dois manuscritos de 1638 associados à Aula da Esfera. Até meados do séc. XVIII são regularmente ensinados em diversas instituições, sempre como instrumentos para facilitar os cálculos trigonométricos. Mais tarde, começam a ser introduzidos no contexto da aritmética, surgindo exemplos de aplicações não trigonométricas. A partir da Reforma Pombalina da Universidade, entram no campo da análise. Com José Anastácio da Cunha há um tratamento analítico inovador a nível europeu.

Logarithms, invented in 1614, arrived in Portugal relatively early: they appear in two manuscripts dated 1638 related to the “Aula da Esfera” in Lisbon. Until mid-18th century, they are regularly taught at several schools, always as tools for facilitating trigonometrical computations. Later, they are introduced in the context of arithmetic, and examples of non-trigonometrical applications appear. With Pombal’s Reform of the University (1770s), logarithms enter the field of analysis. Finally, with José Anastácio da Cunha there is an analytical treatment that is innovative on the European level.
