Resumo(s): | Os hedge funds surgem como produto financeiro alternativo, bastante diferente dos tradicionais
investimentos, como os mutual funds. Estes investimentos, segundo Meligkotsidou, Vrontos e Vrontos
(2009), têm uma natureza altamente dinâmica e flexível utilizando alavancagem, vendas a descoberto
e produtos derivados.
funds, a equity market neutral .
Vrontos (2009).
hedge funds. Hedge funds appear as an alternative financial product, different from all traditional investments, like mutual funds. These alternative investments, according to Meligkotsidou, Vrontos e Vrontos (2009) have a high dynamic nature and flexibility, using leverage, short-selling and derivative products. This complex trading style generates non-linear payoffs, excess of kurtosis and negative skewness. Considering the reality of hedge funds, this study aims to analyze the strategy equity market neutral. This strategy was chosen for its dual purpose: it aims to be immune to market fluctuations and, at the same time, tries to take advantage of market inefficiencies, the differences between long and short positions in the capital market. Therefore, this study bases its analysis on neutrality, ie, whether the funds are immune to fluctuations in financial markets and performance. The study analyzes if managers are able to get abnormal risk-adjusted excess returns. A sample of 70 equity market neutral hedge funds, of the North American market, over the period March 2006 to October 2012 analyzed. For the study of neutrality the model of CAPM by Sharpe (1964) and Lintner (1965) was used as methodology, as well as, the concept of neutrality of Patton (2009), the neutrality analysis according market conditions of Billio, Getmansky e Pelizzon (2012) and the analysis of extreme events using quantile regressions according to Meligkotsidou, Vrontos e Vrontos (2009). For the performance study the multifactor model of Foerster (2006) and, also, the linear model of Agarwal and Naik (2004), based in different economic variables and on market index options were used. The results show that the equity market neutral hedge funds are immune to market fluctuations, even during extreme events, like financial crashes or liquidity crises. The performance results are in line with the market, there is no evidence that managers are able to beat the market, no free lunch in financial markets. None of the economic variables or style factors can explain the returns of equity market neutral hedge funds in a convincing way, evidencing the complexity trading system of hedge funds. |
