O baptismo em Portugal entre a Idade Média e o século XVIII

Abstract

A caminharmos cada vez mais para uma sociedade laica e com os olhos postos no futuro, as cerimónias herdadas do Antigo Regime têm vindo a perder toda a sua expressão simbólica e o seu carácter indispensável. Perante tal panorama, os historiadores começaram há alguns anos a estudar as festas medievais e modernas e o seu significado. Hoje em dia, tal investigação tem vindo a ocupar um lugar de destaque na historiografia nacional e internacional. No entanto, o estudo do ritual do baptismo das crianças ainda carece de atenção no nosso País. O principal objectivo desta dissertação de mestrado será o de apresentar uma visão do sacramento em questão, para se recuperar as suas mais variadas representações gestuais numa vasta área geográfica portuguesa, percorrendo o Norte até ao Sul e atravessando o mar até às ilhas oceânicas. De igual forma, usámos um período cronológico alargado, situado entre a Baixa Idade Média até aos inícios da contemporaneidade.

With the progressive advent of a secular society, with eyes set on the future, Old Regime ceremonies lost much of their symbolic meaning, as well as their imperative nature. Historians of traditional societies have begun to study medieval and early modern festivities and their significance. Their research has gained a prominent place in both national and international historiography; however, the study of baptism in Portugal still lacks attention. The main purpose of this master’s dissertation is to present an overview of the aforementioned sacrament, through the study of its practices across Portugal and its Atlantic islands, covering a wide chronological period, ranging from the lower Middle Ages until the beginning of the Modern Period. The results of our enquiry have stressed the importance of the aftermath of the Council of Trent, that succeeded in putting an end to most misrules concerning baptism, thus transforming it into an universal sacrament for all children born within Catholic areas.
