Abstract(s)Wireless technology has huge developments that can be implemented in many of the soil mechanics test equipment. However, nowadays it is still far from being of full use in geotechnical engineering all over the world. This paper reports a brief state of art of the wireless use in geotechnical engineering and presents in detail a wireless CPTU prototype (CPTUwl) developed in University of Minho. In this prototype a new solution was developed leading to significant improvements in relation to the existing wireless CPTU. The new proposed solution provides simultaneous remote data acquisition and system power supply, allowing for long term data acquisition, without the need of cables or batteries. The CPTUwl prototype allows the data acquisition in a laptop of the continuous measurements. Moreover, since this solution also delivers the required power supply for the down-hole sensing and communication devices, this prototype has the potential to support more complex and bandwidth demanding monitoring devices.
