Planeamento da urbanização e do turismo em retrospectiva : análises Interdisciplinares

Abstract

This paper brings to the fore the possibilities of an cross-disciplinary approach to the contrastive analysis of urban and tourism plans, especially concerning the use and applications of corpora in the analysis of interdiscursive practices, as the ones involving official regulations on planning issues. Drawing on an exploratory analysis of urban plans, this comparative study also highlights the growing emphasis on the use of a corpus-based research of specialised language, by examining the implications of corpus findings in territory planning and public participation domains. It also focuses on recurrent trends in regional land-use planning, concerning conservation and/or development across the nineties, in Portugal. Therefore, the plans differing in date of approval as well as territorial scope of implementation and aims are compared within a cross-disciplinary framework: PROTAL and PROTAML, on the one hand and POT Madeira, on the other. Two major fields, namely linguistics (i.e., corpora in discourse analysis, borrowing from Baker, 2006) and territory planning, will shed some light on the aforementioned problem posing. Main findings, drawing on exploratory data, point towards increasing levels of subjectivity in interdiscursive practices. There are multiple modal instances of epistemic nature, likely to underpin possibility or flexibility in the adoption of future courses of action concerning land use, occupation and transformation. Hence, their systematic analysis, on a segmental, supra-segmental and textual level, will disentangle a focus on development rather than on conservation.
