Autor: Lemos, Francisco Sande; Marcos, Domingos

Les nouveaux donnes confirment les conclusions des fouilles de 1981.; In 1982 a new excavation was undertaken at the medieval necropolis of Vila dos Sinos, Mogadouro. Between the last year digs (1981) and the church's head, 31 graves has been located, but only 10 were excavated. The new data agree with the conclusions of the first excavation.

Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure among children. Implications for a smoke free home educational programme

Título: Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure among children. Implications for a smoke free home educational programme

Autor: Precioso, José; Samorinha, Catarina; Calheiros, José; Macedo, Manuel; Antunes, Henedina; Ravara, Sofia; Campos, Hugo

Resumo: Background: SecondHand Smoke (SHS) exposure among children represents amajor cause of serious health problems. Children exposed to SHS are at an increasedrisk of serious health problems like sudden infant death syndrome, pneumonia, earinfections and more severe asthma. Studies have shown that SHS exposure is quitecommon, occurring frequently at home and in the car. A previous study conducted inPortugal (2002) with 1141 children with 12-15 years old revealed that 38% of themwere daily or occasionally exposed to SHS due to the smoke of parents or siblings athome. No information was available for 9-10 years old. Objectives: 1) To determineparents smoking prevalence in the sample; 2) To determine the prevalence of parentssmoking at home. Methods: An anonymous self-administered structuredquestionnaire was submitted to 793 students (aged media 9.14 years; 48.6% girls;51.4% boys), enrolled in Portugal’s Northern Region’ schools. Results: 15.5% of themothers and 37.0% of the fathers are daily smokers; 11.4% of the mothers and 25.8%of the fathers are daily or occasional home smokers. 14,2% of children report that atleast one of the co-inhabitants (father, mother, brother/sister or other) smokes daily athome and 28.0% refer they smoke occasionally at home. Conclusions: Almost half ofthe children evaluated are daily or occasionally exposed to SHS, because a highproportion of parents or other people like brother/sister regularly smoke at home.Health professionals, especially Pediatricians, should systematically inquire andadvise parents about the health risks of SHS and advise them to quit or even forwardto a specialised query.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate allows the persistence and recovery of biofilms of Pseudomonas fluorescens formed under different hydrodynamic conditions

Título: Sodium dodecyl sulfate allows the persistence and recovery of biofilms of Pseudomonas fluorescens formed under different hydrodynamic conditions

Autor: Simões, M.; Simões, Lúcia C.; Pereira, M. O.; Vieira, M. J.

Resumo: The effect of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on Pseudomonas fluorescens biofilms wasinvestigated using flow cell reactors with stainless steel substrata, under turbulent (Re=5200) and laminar(Re=2000) flow. Steady-state biofilms were exposed to SDS in single doses (0.5, 1, 3 and 7 mM) and biofilmrespiratory activity and mass measured at 0, 3, 7 and 12 h after the SDS application. The effect of SDS on biofilmmechanical stability was assessed using a rotating bioreactor. Whilst high concentrations (7 mM) of SDS promotedsignificant biofilm inactivation, it did not significantly reduce biofouling. Turbulent and laminar flow-generatedbiofilms had comparable susceptibility to SDS application. Following SDS exposure, biofilms rapidly recovered overthe following 12 h, achieving higher respiratory activity values than before treatment. This phenomenon of posttreatmentrecovery was more pronounced for turbulent flow-generated biofilms, with an increase in SDSconcentration. The mechanical stability of the biofilms increased with surfactant application, except for SDSconcentrations near the critical micellar concentration, as measured by biofilm removal due to an increase in externalshear stress forces. The data suggest that although SDS exerts antimicrobial action against P. fluorescens biofilms, even if only partial and reversible, it had only limited antifouling efficacy, increasing biofilm mechanical stability atlow concentrations and allowing significant and rapid recovery of turbulent flow-generated biofilms.

They give a morphological analyse of the statue and the reading and the interpretation of the lext engraved on the warrior's caetra, and they also discuss the function that this type of statue might have served.

Título: A ocupação da Idade do Bronze no Castro de Lanhoso (Póvoa de Lanhoso - Braga)

Autor: Bettencourt, Ana M. S.

A esta fase atribuímos, também, um punhal de bronze, inédito, encontrado durante as escavações de Carlos Teixeira, nos anos 30.; We notice some archaeological finds found during the excavations of K. Petruso, in 1982, on the East slope of Castro de Lanhoso. The morphological and technological characteristics of the pottery suggest three main stages of occupation: the oldest one dated from the Calcolithic period, the second one from the Bronze Age and the later connected with the Romanization of the hill-fort.
