a localização lesões.
foi capaz de segmentar corretamente vasos finos, que correspondem a regiões de detalhe muito fino.; Semantic segmentation is an image processing topic particularly useful in areas such as medicine, since it enables
the extraction of relevant information such as the size and volume of structures, as well as facilitating the localization
of lesions. By employing automated segmentation techniques, it is possible to reduce the time required for image
analysis since this task can be extremely time-consuming and complex.
Many of the automatic segmentation techniques are based on deep learning. However, despite the good results
achieved by these models, there are still some challenges. One of them corresponds to the increased difficulty when
images exhibit significant intra-class variance, a characteristic particularly common in medical imaging.
The objective of this dissertation focuses on two topics: contrastive methods and prototype-based learning
methods, in addition to the development of a semantic segmentation model based on these techniques. Contrastive
learning methods aim to emphasize the differences between images or specific regions of images, while prototype based learning methods aim to construct representative prototypes of various classes. The developed model was
applied to the semantic segmentation of retinal blood vessels.
Throughout the various stages of the proposed work, several variants were studied with the goal of optimizing
the results obtained. The best system consists of two main components: the backbone, that is used as a feature
extractor, and the prototype network, that substitutes the softmax layer on the base network. In quantitative terms,
average accuracy values of 0.9565 and a Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.8033 were obtained, and these
results are associated with the DRIVE dataset. Overall, it was found that the proposed model was capable of
correctly segmenting thin vessels, which correspond to regions of very fine detail.

atividades laborais do paciente.
anatómicas do paciente.
desgastante e dispendioso.
A diretiva desta
incorporados no modelo base.
roboticamente assistidas, necessitando apenas de mínimas alterações.; Robotic-assisted surgeries have been replacing open surgeries with a significant
impact on patient recovery time, and consequently, on various aspects such as
healthcare resource savings and the early resumption of the patient's work activities.
This type of surgery, assisted by a robotic system, is guided by a laparoscopic camera,
providing the surgeon with a view of the patient's anatomical structures. To operate this
equipment, surgeons must undergo numerous hours of training, making the process
exhaustive and costly. In addition, manipulating surgical instruments in coordination
with the laparoscopic camera is not an intuitive process, meaning errors of a subjective
nature are not eliminated. The objective of this thesis is the development of an
automated system capable of segmenting surgical instruments, thereby enabling
constant monitoring of their positions. Various machine learning models were explored
to address this issue. In a second phase, methods that could be incorporated into the
base model were considered. Once a solution was found, a comparison was made
between the previously selected models, the base model, and the optimized model. In
a third approach, with the aim of improving the comparison metrics, alternative
solutions were sought, including the generation of synthetic data. At this point, two
possibilities were encountered, one based on autonomous learning systems through
competition and the other on image synthesis learning systems from progressively
increasing noise spectral density. Both approaches expanded the available database,
and their effectiveness was evaluated by comparing the impact of data augmentation
on segmentation systems. The proposed system can potentially be implemented in
robotic-assisted surgeries with minimal modifications.

Resumo: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the clinical practice of orthopedic surgeons by combining technology
with their technical skills. AI can play a primary role in standardizing pre-surgical planning, assisting
orthopedic surgeons in the decision-making process to minimize medical errors, guiding appropriate surgical
management, and reducing the cost and duration of surgery through intelligent solutions in the field of
orthopedics. The complexity and variability of the glenoid cavity anatomy have been a challenge for the medical
community, especially in reconstructive surgical interventions such as shoulder arthroplasty. This surgery is
recommended for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA), a pathology defined by the progressive degeneration of
the articular cartilage of the humeral head and glenoid, causing pain, stiffness, and limitation of movement.
In preoperative planning, a 3D reconstruction of glenoid bone defects can play a fundamental role in the
comprehension of the patient’s native anatomy and, consequently, assist the orthopedic surgeon in the
decision-making process, to restore the morphological parameters of the scapula, which is crucial for
functional outcomes and the longevity of the implant.
The main objective of this dissertation is the reconstruction of the healthy anatomy of the glenoid from
three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) images through Generative Deep learning (GDL). In
quantitative terms, the goal of this project is to virtually reconstruct glenoid bone defects so that the
estimated version is within the range [-5º, 10º] since the purpose of shoulder arthroplasty is to accurately
restore a healthy patient’s anatomy. This project explores two approaches for training a 3D image-to-image translation model: Pix2Pix and CycleGAN. In Pix2Pix, a reference image in the original domain 𝑋 is available for each image in the target
domain 𝑌, allowing one-to-one mapping. In contrast, CycleGAN performs training with unpaired data, the
images in domain 𝑋 are semantically related to the images in domain 𝑌, and there is not necessarily a
reference image in domain 𝑌 for each image in domain 𝑋. The distinguishing feature of CycleGAN is the
incorporation of cycle consistency loss, which facilitates training without paired data. In other words, this
model translates from the original domain to the target domain without a one-to-one mapping. This study
aims to investigate and compare the performance of these two architectures in the context of healthy bone
reconstruction. Concisely, the generative model (CycleGAN or Pix2Pix) seeks to learn the mapping function
between two domains, 𝐺 ∶ 𝑋 → 𝑌, i.e., the conversion of an image 𝑥 from the domain 𝑋 to an image
𝐺(𝑥) from the domain 𝑌, where 𝑥 is an image of a scapula with the glenoid removed and 𝐺(𝑥) the sample
produced by the generator, which wants to conceive images similar to those of the real dataset of the healthydomain. The study demonstrates the potential of the CycleGAN and Pix2Pix models to reconstruct a healthy
bone from a defective bone. Taking into consideration a significantly larger dataset, both models are expected to outperform in
reconstructing a defective glenoid. That opens up a possibility for the development of an automated and
intelligent virtual reconstruction tool that can be used in clinical applications, to ensure that the preoperative
planning process of shoulder arthroplasty is efficient and quick, guide an appropriate surgical management,
facilitate communication between surgeons, minimize medical errors, provide prognostic information, and
optimize the performance of shoulder arthroplasty.

Minho.; Electricity is increasingly present in everyday life, when in the past it was mostly used at the industrial
level and for public lighting. The proliferation of its use has reached a point where it has become an
essential commodity for our lifestyle. However, the increase in energy needs leads to an increase in the
scarcity of resources such as fossil fuels, resources that are primarily responsible for environmental
pollution, contributing to the greenhouse effect.
In the transport sector, one of the elements responsible for reducing dependence on fossil fuels are
electric vehicles (EVs), converting mobility from a landscape heavily powered by fossil fuels to electric
energy, which, despite being partially derived from fossil fuels, is converted more efficiently than vehicles
with internal combustion engine. With the possibility of EVs integrating charging systems that allow
bidirectional operation, EVs can be a very significant asset to the power grid and can also become a key
element in contributing to the improvement of electric power quality. Due to the importance of EVs, the
electrical elements that constitute them are under constant investigation, idealizing new topologies of
converters, electrical machines, batteries, and combinations of connection between converters for
charging batteries.
Therefore, this paper aims to complement and deepen the study of a traction system for EVs based on
the permanent magnet synchronous reluctance machine. This type of electrical machine results from the
combination of the permanent magnet synchronous machine and the synchronous reluctance machine
and is selected due to the fact that it is an emerging electrical machine topology in the EV paradigm. The
traction system is initially validated using computer simulations and is later validated using a bench
prototype previously developed in the laboratory of the Group of Energy and Power Electronics (GEPE) of
the University of Minho.

desempenho do sistema.
procedimentos minimamente invasivos. Como tal, estas cirurgias proporcionarão melhores resultados,
aumentando as taxas de sucesso e a qualidade de vida dos pacientes.; This work aims to develop a highly miniaturized ultrasound probe since there is a lack of suitable
real-time monitoring techniques that can be used during minimally invasive procedures. For example,
such device could be highly beneficial during brain tumor resection as a brain shift occurs entailing
noticeable differences between pre-operative imaging and the actual positioning of the tissues.
Ultrasound is a very popular imaging technique due to its singular advantages, such as safety
because it doesn’t use ionizing radiation, ability to provide real-time imaging, disposability, low cost, and
non-invasiveness. However, conventional ultrasound probes have a large size that is inadequate for
minimally invasive surgeries.
As such, in this work, ultrasound waves were generated through the photoacoustic effect, which
allows a high degree of miniaturization of an ultrasound probe, as a result of the incidence of light pulses
on a sample of MWCNTs covered by PDMS. A theoretical design and a simulation model in a multiphysics
simulation tool were included to examine the influence of the different parameters on the system's
performance. It was possible to obtain a directional ultrasound emitter through this model with a lateral
dimension of 50 m, a maximum emission frequency of 9 MHz, and an acoustic pressure of 13.5 Pa at
a distance of 0.3 mm. Afterwards, an experimental setup was developed with the purpose of verifying the
occurrence of the photoacoustic effect, and under these conditions, a wave with 415 kPa at a distance
of 0.3 mm and with a frequency mainly at 400 kHz was predicted by the simulation model. The
photoacoustic system allowed the experimental detection of an acoustic wave with an amplitude around
250 kPa at a frequency of 2 MHz, as well as multiple replicas resulting from the reflection of this wave
on the walls of the container where the sample was located.
All abovementioned benefits of this technique make it very promising to improve the provided
medical care, allowing more accurate real-time monitoring during minimally invasive procedures. As such,
better outcomes can be achieved from these surgeries, thus improving success rates and patients’ life
quality.
